(NewsNation) — Fyre Festival 2 has reportedly been postponed, with no new date announced. Ticket holders are being issued refunds for the event.

The event was originally scheduled for May 30 to June 2 in Mexico, with ticket prices starting at $1,400. The tickets went on sale in February.

The first Fyre Festival went viral in 2017 after social media images and videos showed a vastly different experience from the one promised by celebrities and influencers who had promoted the event.

Guests had been promised an exclusive music festival on a private island in the Bahamas, with luxury villas, gourmet meals and a chance to mingle with A-list guests.

Instead, attendees found themselves on a public island with the festival site still under construction. Images from the festival showed the “luxury villas” were actually disaster relief tents, and the “gourmet food” was cold sandwiches in take-out containers. Guests also complained of a lack of running water, insufficient wifi and cell connectivity, and insufficient bathroom facilities. The only musical guest was a local band.

The event had been advertised as cashless, with guests told they would need to load money onto festival bands that would be used to purchase goods electronically. Many did not have cash that would have allowed them to find other accommodations.

Festival organizer Billy McFarland was convicted of wire fraud after the 2017 festival, which did not deter him from launching Fyre Festival 2 for 2025.

McFarland made similar promises for the second festival, promising music, arts, food, fashion and more in Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

But Mexican officials reportedly said no event of that name was scheduled to be held or given permission to be held in the weeks leading up to the event.

McFarland denied those reports and said his team had been working with the Mexican government to obtain proper permits to hold the festival.

Ticket holders received messages saying they would be refunded and would be given an option to repurchase a ticket for the new date when it is announced.
