(NewsNation) — Eyebrows were raised and concerns were expressed when “Euphoria” star Eric Dane missed the Emmys on Sunday.
It had previously been announced the actor would present the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series award on stage along with his former “Grey’s Anatomy” costar Jessie Williams, but Williams ended up presenting the award alone.
I’m told the reason behind Dane’s absence is the progression of his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Dane announced he had the degenerative disease in April and later told Diane Sawyer he has lost the use of his right arm. There is no cure for the disease.
I am also told Dane has lost most use of his left arm and now has speech affectations as well, rendering his appearance at the Emmys impossible.
A rep for the actor didn’t return emails.
Eric Dane partners with ALS organization
But on Monday, a day after the Emmys, Dane took to Instagram to reveal a partnership with the nonprofit organization I AM ALS.
“I’m Eric, an actor, a father and now a person living with ALS,” Dane said in the video. The star remained seated during the brief clip and wore a shirt that read “I AM ALS.”
“For over a century, ALS has been incurable, and we’re done accepting the status quo. We need the fastest path to a cure, and that’s why I partnered with I Am ALS on the Push for Progress. Our goal: a billion dollars over the next three years,” he said.
“Together, we’ll renew the landmark law Act for ALS, give promising treatments to thousands of patients like me, and finally, finally, push towards ending this disease,” he continued, urging his followers to join the cause.
We wish Dane and his family the best.
