GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has been sentenced to serve at least 18 years in prison for stalking Eminem and breaking into the rapper’s home.
Matthew Hughes, a 32-year-old from Clinton Township, was sentenced Tuesday for first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking, Macomb County Prosector Peter J. Lucido said in a Wednesday release.
Hughes broke into Eminem’s home in Clinton Township in August of 2024 and was arrested three days later, Detroit NBC affiliate WDIV reports.
A jury found him guilty of the two charges in May. He was sentenced to 15 to 30 years for first-degree for home invasion and three to seven and a half years for aggravated stalking, Lucido said. The two sentences will be served consecutively, so he will serve a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 37.5.
Hughes has also been ordered to have no contact with Marshall Mathers, also known as Eminem.
“No one, celebrity or not, should ever feel unsafe in their own home,” Luicdo said in a statement. “This sentence sends a clear message that stalking and home invasion will be taken seriously in Macomb County and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Everyone has the right to privacy, safety, and peace of mind.”
This is not the first time Hughes has been sentenced for breaking into Eminem’s home. Back in 2020, Hughes broke into the rapper’s Clinton Township home and threatened to kill him, the Associated Press reports. He was sentenced to five years’ probation and time served in that case.
