(NewsNation) — A jury failing to convict Sean “Diddy” Combs on two counts of sex trafficking has wide implications for victims of sex crimes, NewsNation anchor Ashleigh Banfield said Wednesday.
“In my lifetime, women, you know, a wife, couldn’t be raped by her husband, right? So, I sort of look at this as though a jury saw girlfriends can’t be sex trafficked,” Banfield said.
“A jury saw that if you’re willing, one day or one month or one year, and you’re unwilling in another day or another month or a year, that doesn’t count,” she added.
Combs was found guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was found not guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking, which both carried a maximum sentence of life in prison.
“I’m shocked at sex traffic. I’m sad,” Banfrield said. “I’m sad about the sex trafficking, because those women were browbeaten into doing horrible things that they said they didn’t want to do.”
The decision came Wednesday after 13 hours of deliberation over three days by a jury consisting of eight men and four women.
