(NewsNation) — A tale as epic as “The Odyssey” required filmmaker Christopher Nolan to use an equally epic amount of footage to bring the story to life — over 2 million feet to be exact.

The director of “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer” has been filming his take on Homer’s Greek poem for a highly anticipated movie that is set to be released July 17, 2026, in IMAX theaters. Empire reports that Nolan’s 91-day shoot required a harrowing number of resources to capture Odysseus’s equally harrowing 20-year journey home.

“We shot over two million feet of film,” Nolan said. “We really wanted to capture how hard those journeys would have been for people. And the leap of faith that was being made in an unmapped, uncharted world.”

Rolling Stone reported the film required a $250 million budget. Nolan shot the entire film using IMAX cameras, marking a first for a commercial feature, with only a few dozen theaters worldwide capable of screening the movie in 70mm film.

However, audiences will also have the option to watch the film in normal theaters as well as other premium formats.

The star-studded cast includes big names like Matt Damon, Lupita Nyong’o, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway. The trailer for the film is scheduled to drop in December.
