(NewsNation) — A judge has denied Blake Lively’s request to keep her texts with Taylor Swift private from Justin Baldoni in the “It Ends With Us” co-stars’ continuing legal battle, according to reports.
Documents reportedly show that Judge Lewis J. Liman denied Lively’s request for a protective order on Wednesday. After dropping their subpoena against Swift, Baldoni’s legal team allegedly “demanded” access to these records.
On Wednesday, Liman wrote in a letter, “Lively’s motion is rooted in the broader concern that the Wayfarer Parties are using demands for communications with Swift not ‘to obtain information relevant to claims and defenses in court, but to prop up a public relations narrative outside of court.'”
He also said, “That order was designed precisely to ensure that parties may share sensitive information that may be ‘only tangentially related to the underlying cause of action’ without fear that it will be leaked to the press.”
Justin Baldoni’s team says Blake Lively, Taylor Swift texts are needed
Baldoni’s team has claimed communications between Lively and Swift are vital to the lawsuit.
Liman further explained the ruling, saying, “Given that Lively has represented that Swift had knowledge of complaints or discussions about the working environment on the film, among other issues, the requests for messages with Swift regarding the film and this action are reasonably tailored to discover information that would prove or disprove Lively’s harassment and retaliation claims.”
In a statement to People magazine, a representative for Lively, 37, said, “The Court’s protective order ruling rests on the Wayfarer Parties’ admission that they received nothing from Taylor Swift, which is exactly the opposite of what their ‘insider’ claimed two weeks ago.”
The representative also said, “Baldoni’s desire to drag Taylor Swift into this has been constant, dating back to August 2024, when the crisis PR firm led by Melissa Nathan included her in their ‘Scenario Planning’ document… referred to her as a bully, and called for a strategy to influence the ‘TS fanbase.'”
Lively’s team said they would “continue to call out Baldoni’s relentless efforts to exploit Ms Swift’s popularity.”
The protective order motion alleged that Baldoni and his team had “pursed [these communications] at the same time they have refused to produce to Ms. Lively the documents they publicly claimed to have received as part of a deal to withdraw their subpoenas to Ms. Swift and her counsel.”
Justin Baldoni suit against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds dropped by judge
Earlier this month, Liman dismissed Baldoni’s $400 million countersuit against Lively, her husband, Ryan Reynolds, and the couple’s publicist, Leslie Sloane. The judge also dropped Baldoni’s $250 million suit against the New York Times.
Baldoni’s team has until June 23 to amend some of the claims in the suit. The decision said, in part:
“The Wayfarer Parties have alleged that Reynolds and (publicist Leslie) Sloane made additional statements accusing Baldoni of sexual misconduct and that the Times made additional statements accusing the Wayfarer Parties of engaging in a smear campaign. But the Wayfarer Parties have not alleged that Reynolds, Sloane or the Times would have seriously doubted these statements were true based on the information available to them, as is required for them to be liable for defamation under applicable law.”
Lively also withdrew some of the emotional distress claims she made against Baldoni. The trial for Lively’s suit against her former co-star has been scheduled for March 2026.
