(NewsNation) — Ben Affleck, a devoted Boston Red Sox fan, defended his refusal to wear a New York Yankees cap in the film “Gone Girl.”
While promoting his upcoming film “The Rip” with best friend and co-star Matt Damon, the pair were asked in a video on Netflix’s Instagram page, “Who refused to wear a Yankees cap for a movie?”
In a video posted on one of Netflix’s Instagram accounts, Affleck, Damon and their costars, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Sasha Calle, raised their paddles saying it was Affleck.
The “Argo” director refused to wear a New York Yankees baseball cap while filming a scene in David Fincher’s 2014 hit “Gone Girl,” resulting in a production pause, because he didn’t want to even fictionally endorse the Red Sox’s rival.
“You actually shut production down because you wouldn’t work,” Damon said.
“The director shut it down by insisting that I wear that,” Affleck responded. “I just had to take time to explain to him why it was a bad idea.”
Ben Affleck and David Fincher compromise
Fincher had asked Affleck to wear the hat because his character, Nick, had lived in New York with his wife, Amy, played by Rosamund Pike, according to People Magazine.
The baseball cap was meant to hide him from the public as attention shifted to him regarding his missing wife.

“That was the only fight David and I had, and it was a legitimate fight,” the Academy Award winner told The New York Times in 2014.
“I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you, but I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it,’” he said.
“And I couldn’t put it on my head,” Affleck said at the time.
The “Panic Room” director and Affleck eventually reached a compromise by having Nick wear a New York Mets baseball cap in the movie.
