MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is now in custody and facing an auto theft charge after a woman allegedly caught him driving her stolen car.

Charles Campbell, 47, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with Theft of Property – Auto $10,000-$60,000.

On March 9, a woman reported to police that when she woke up, her 2013 Hyundai Elantra had been stolen from her driveway. Two days later, while driving her other car, the woman saw her stolen Hyundai at a Valero Gas Station on North Hollywood Street.

She blocked the car in and called the police. Charles Campbell was then taken into custody.

Campbell reportedly told police that he did not steal the car, he found it unoccupied and running behind a house in Frayser at around 6 a.m. that morning. He said he knew the car was stolen “because the steering column was popped,” but he took the car anyway.

Police say Campbell drove around, went to the liquor store, then the gas station before he was caught.

His bond has not been set but he is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
