What we know about those killed in NYC high-rise shooting

(NewsNation) — A gunman armed with an assault-style rifle killed four people Monday in a Manhattan high-rise building that houses the National Football League headquarters and several financial firms before turning the gun on himself, according to authorities.

Authorities said 27-year-old Shane Tamura, of Nevada, was believed to have acted alone in the shooting. An official motive has not yet been released.

Here’s what we know about the victims:

Didarul Islam

NYPD Officer Didarul Islam (NYPD)

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was a veteran of the New York Police Department for more than three years. Authorities said he was off-duty and working as a private security detail when the shooting occurred, according to NewsNation affiliate WPIX.

“He put himself in harm’s way. He paid the ultimate sacrifice,” New York City police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. “Shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise he made to this city. He died as he lived, a hero.”

Didarul was an immigrant from Bangladesh who was said to love New York City. Tisch said he leaves behind a wife and two young sons, and was expecting a third child.

“My heart is with his loved ones, his NYPD family and every victim of this tragedy,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

Wesley LePatner

Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner was identified as another victim of Monday’s shooting by a spokesperson with the company.

According to Blackstone’s website, LePatner was the Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and the Chief Executive Officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. She had been with the investment company since 2014.

“Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond.”

The statement added that LePatner leaves behind her husband and two children.

Aland Etienne

Aland Etienne, a security guard, has been identified as the third victim in Monday’s shooting by the president of the New York City branch of the Service Employees International Union.

“We extend our deep condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones tonight, including that of our own 32BJ SEIU security member Aland Etienne, a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously,” SEIU President Manny Pastreich said in a statement.

Julia Hyman

Julia Hyman was confirmed to be the fourth victim of the Manhattan shooting by Cornell University, where she graduated from in 2020. Hyman was an associate at Rudin Management, which was based in the high-rise where the shooting happened.

“We are devasted for Julia’s friends and family, including her parents and sister Ali, a 2017 graduate of the College of Human Ecology,” Cornell President Michael I. Kotlikoff said in a statement. “We also extend our sympathy to the loved ones of the three other victims, including New York Police Officer Didarul Islam. We extend our deepest condolences to all the families whose loved ones were lost in this senseless act.”

Rudin Management shared a statement with NewsNation where they said they were “devastated by yesterday’s senseless tragedy.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and lost last night, including our cherished Rudin colleague, a brave New York City police officer, a beloved lobby security guard and an employee at a tenant firm,” the statement continued. “As New Yorkers, we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this hatred, we grieve with the families and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the full recovery of those injured.”
