(NewsNation) — A body found on the edge of a California mountainside last month has been identified as a missing wealthy socialite, and now her son is speaking out.
A body was found on Nov. 18, about 75 feet down an embankment along Highway 138 in Crestline, about 70 miles east of Los Angeles and 75 miles northeast of Newport Beach.
On Nov. 29, the body was identified as Aryan Papoli, 58, whose family reported her missing on Nov. 22.
Her son told the Los Angeles Times she immigrated to the United States from Tehran, Iran, at the age of 18 with her mother and sister and made a new life for herself.
“My mom was a ray of light, sunshine manifested,” said Navid Goodarzi, a 25-year-old master’s student at Harvard University. “She always gave 150% to herself and to everyone.”
Papoli met her husband, Abas Goodarzi, in the San Francisco Bay area. The two founded U.S. Hybrid, a clean energy company.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was initially unable to identify the body and released a composite sketch of the face. Two days after Thanksgiving, Goodarzi received a call he never could have imagined.
“When she was missing, we were sort of going from this frantic pass, all engines flaring, like how can we find her?” Goodarzi told ABC 7. “When we got the news, it sort of feels like the wind gets knocked out of you. The first day, it’s a lot of shock.”
Papoli moved to Newport Beach six months ago following her retirement from the corporate world, according to the LA Times.
Her son declined to comment on his mother’s disappearance, instead focusing on her legacy, when speaking to the LA Times.
The sheriff’s department said Papoli’s injuries were consistent with a fall, although it has not said whether foul play is suspected.
