CHICAGO — Friends and family of a teen gunned down after he left soccer practice last week held a vigil in the boy’s honor Monday afternoon on what should have been the first day of his senior year.
Classmates of Juan Salgado, who was captain of the soccer team at Benito Juarez Community Academy, presented his father with the teen’s soccer jersey at the emotional afternoon gathering.
“This is a tragic loss, not just for the family but for the community; a senseless loss of talent skill and leadership,” said Fr. Brendan Curran with The Resurrection Project.
Salgado, 17, was shot in the left shoulder a week ago by someone in a truck on the 3800 block of West 26th Street. He was transported to Mt. Sinai in good condition but later died at the hospital.
“Let this be truly the last student that we lose at this school,” Curran said.
