(NewsNation) — Court documents show the suspect in the killing of University of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley used an object as a weapon and is accused of “disfiguring her skull.”
Authorities have not said exactly how Riley was killed, just that her death was caused by blunt force trauma. Ibarra is accused of dragging the 22-year-old to a secluded location Thursday, an allegation filed to support the charge of concealing the death of another person.
Ibarra, 26, faces multiple murder and assault charges after Riley’s body was found on the UGA campus. Riley, who was attending Augusta University at the time of her death, was reported missing by a friend after she didn’t return home from a run.
Ibarra is a Venezuelan citizen who immigration authorities say unlawfully crossed into the U.S. in 2022. His immigration status has ignited widespread outrage and questions as to whether stronger immigration policy could have prevented this death.
Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee are sending a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, asking for more information about Ibarra.

“The Biden Administration’s border and immigration policies only increase the likelihood that criminal aliens will successfully enter and remain in the U.S.” the letter said. “Pursuant to the Rules of the House of Representatives, the Committee on the Judiciary is authorized to conduct oversight of federal immigration policy and procedures.”
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Ibarra was arrested by New York police in August, and charged with acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17 and a motor vehicle license violation. He was released before ICE could ask New York officials to hold him until immigration authorities could take him into custody, ICE said.
New York officials said Sunday they have no record of the arrest.
Hundreds of students and faculty members gathered Monday afternoon for an emotional vigil for Riley organized by her sorority sisters at the University of Georgia campus.
“Laken showed devotion with every aspect of her life,” said Chloe Mullis, president of the University of Georgia chapter of Alpha Chi Omega. “Doing things halfway just wasn’t an option. We lost one of the brightest lights that has ever been.”
