MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The mayor of Gallaway, Tennessee, was arrested after deputies say they found crack cocaine in his possession during a traffic stop last Friday on Highway 59 South.

Jamie Mayo, 65, was charged with drug possession, manufacturing/delivering/selling a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia. His bond is set at $10,000.

Tipton County deputies say they found 0.25 grams of crack cocaine under the passenger seat of a vehicle where he was sitting.

Deputies say they saw a red Dodge Ram 1500 driving northbound on Highway 59 South around 10:27 p.m. with dark window tint and non-functioning tag lights.

A traffic stop was then conducted.

The driver was informed about the dark tint and tag light not functioning properly, deputies say. During that time, the passenger, identified by authorities as Jamie Mayo, was accused of having nervous behavior and had requested to exit the vehicle.

Another deputy arrived at the scene and assisted Mayo out of the vehicle.

The driver then gave deputies verbal consent to search the vehicle, when they found a white crystal rock substance under the front passenger seat, where they say Mayo had previously been sitting.

Deputies say the crystal substance tested positive for cocaine. Mayo was then taken into custody and charged.

According to Attorney Van Turner for the City of Gallaway, Jamie Mayo bonded out of jail and remains in the position of Mayor of Gallaway. He is in his second term as the mayor.

Gallaway, in Fayette County just northeast of Arlington, had an estimated 521 residents in 2024.

He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
