(NewsNation) — A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the death of a female paddleboarder in Maine.
According to The Associated Press, Maine State Police arrested the teen Wednesday night. It follows the death of Sunshine Stewart, 48, who never returned home after paddleboarding the evening of July 2.
Stewart’s body was found near 100 Acre Island in the town of Union, Maine. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined Stewart’s cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma, police said.
The teen’s name has not been released due to his age. Police did not say why he was arrested or if he was charged, and they declined to release any other information about him as the investigation is ongoing.
“People are still guessing as to who the actual individual is,” Sam Patten, managing editor of The Maine Wire, told “Banfield.”
Police have asked for information from anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding on July 2 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond or anyone who has any other information related to the case.
Stewart’s longtime friend Meredith Smith joined “Banfield” last Friday night to discuss the sort of person Stewart was and the ongoing homicide case.
Smith described Stewart as a “very vibrant person, outgoing, silly at times, strong-willed, independent, adventurous; she was just an overall great person.
“Nobody wants to hurt Sonny,” Smith said.”That’s the scary part about it, because she had a lot of friends all over the world.
