(NewsNation) — Country music singer Spencer Hatcher’s parents were attacked by a stranger during a home invasion in Rockingham County, Virginia.
His mother, Holly Hatcher, was stabbed to death by Kevin Moses Walker during what is being considered a random home invasion just before midnight Aug. 3, county sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said.
Authorities say Spencer Hatcher‘s father, Michael, shot Walker in an act of self-defense, killing the 41-year-old intruder.

Michael Hatcher sustained “serious injuries,” Spencer Hatcher said in a video posted by the the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael and Spencer Hatcher thanked the community for the support they’ve received following their loved one’s death.
“We’ve cried. We’ve hurt and we’ve hugged,” Michael Hatcher said in the video. “We have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us and between you.”
“This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind,” Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said at a press conference, according to the New York Post.
Days before the killings, Walker rented a campsite at Endless Caverns in New Market, Va., and purchased a knife at a nearby Walmart, the Post reports.
Spencer Hatcher cancels tour dates
Spencer Hatcher canceled several upcoming shows in the wake of the tragedy.
“I hope to make these dates up to my fans in the future .. We ask that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this time,” he said in a social media post.
