(NewsNation) — The list of bombshells continues to grow in the mysterious death of Sandra Birchmore.
In the latest development reported by the Boston Globe, new DNA results show a former Massachusetts police officer charged in her killing is not the father of her unborn child.
Birchmore, 23 and pregnant, was found dead in her Canton, Massachusetts, apartment in 2021. Her death was initially ruled a suicide despite suspicious details.
Sandra Birchmore’s family says police officers abused, groomed her for years
Birchmore’s family has accused three Stoughton police officers of grooming and abusing her for years, reportedly beginning when she was a young teen participating in the Stoughton Police Explorers Academy.
Former detective Matthew Farwell was indicted for her death in August 2024. He has pleaded not guilty.
Farwell allegedly killed Birchmore in February 2021 by strangulation and “staged” her Canton apartment “to make it appear as if Birchmore had committed suicide,” court records stated.
Thousands of texts revealed an alleged years-long relationship that began when Birchmore was 15 and Farwell was 27. Farwell is accused of killing her after she told him she was pregnant and that she wanted him involved in her child’s life. At the time, Farwell was married with children.
Sources: Matthew Farwell wasn’t the father of Sandra Birchmore’s child
Now, two anonymous sources familiar with the case told the Boston Globe that DNA testing of the fetus and Farwell rules out that he was the unborn child’s father.
The latest DNA twist raises new questions. Who is the father of Birchmore’s unborn baby, and will it impact Farwell’s case? Alexandra Kazarian, senior trial attorney at Geragos and Geragos, joined NewsNation’s “Banfield” on Friday evening to discuss the possible directions arguments in the case could be headed.
Kazarian believes that despite the new DNA bombshell, prosecutors likely still have a case.
“Even if you take the baby out of the picture, exposing their relationship to his wife could be a prosecution theory, exposing their underage sexcapades could be a theory — There may be a statute of limitations issue there — But, I think that there is enough within those 30,000-however many text messages for the prosecution to at least make an argument that he has a motive to get rid of her, so that she won’t expose him — Whether he is the father or not,” Kazarian told NewsNation’s “Banfield.”
Kazarian said she’s not sure whether Farwell’s defense attorneys need to even find out who the father of Sandra Birchmore’s baby is to help his case.
“Now, I think that you have a tragic, but potentially plausible story that he didn’t do it. All I need to tell that jury is that there is a reasonable alternative that makes him not the killer,” she said.
At this time, it’s unclear if the unborn child’s father has been identified. A date for Farwell’s trial has not been set.
