(NewsNation) — Airport police shot and killed a man wielding a knife at the St. Louis airport Friday morning, a police spokesperson said.

The man was holding a knife and refusing orders to leave, St. Louis County Police spokesperson Vera Clay told reporters Friday. She said they first tried to use a Taser, but the man continued advancing on officers, at which point one officer fired his weapon. The man was later pronounced dead.

The shooting took place in Terminal 1 of St. Louis Lambert International Airport, before the security checkpoint, Clay said. She added officers did not believe the man was “using the airport as travel.”

The shooting comes as one of the busiest travel weeks of the year kicks off across the country, with people making their way to Thanksgiving destinations.
