PROVIDENCE, R.I. (NewsNation) — Nearly a week after a gunman opened fire at Brown University, police in Providence, Rhode Island, are seeking the public’s help identifying an individual who was “in proximity” to a person of interest.
In a social media post, the Providence Police Department said investigators want to identify and speak with the person shown in newly released photos. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police tip line at 401-272-3121.
In a news briefing Wednesday, police Chief Oscar Perez warned of the spread of AI-generated images, urging the public not to rely on them and to instead look for updates directly from the department.
Authorities have described the Dec. 13 attack, which left two students dead and nine others injured, as targeted.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said one victim remains in critical condition, five are critical but stable, one is in stable condition, and two others have been discharged from the hospital.
Map of person of interest’s confirmed movements released
Authorities also released a map showing the movements of the person of interest. They say some of the markings on the map show movements confirmed by video footage released days earlier. They drew a blue zone on the map to indicate where investigators are looking for additional security footage.

Video tracks movements of person of interest
On Tuesday, police released additional videos and photos of the person of interest, along with a timeline of his movements.
Perez said authorities learned Saturday night the man was “in the neighborhood” at 10:30 a.m. on the day of the shooting. Criminals often case their targets in the days or even weeks before an attack, he notes.
New video of the unidentified person of interest keeps coming from authorities after they released an initial person of interest from custody due to a lack of evidence.
FBI Boston, in collaboration with the Providence Police Department, released a video timeline of the movements of the person of interest on the day of the shooting, then deleted it and released a different version.
The time codes begin at 2 p.m. local time Saturday and conclude at 4:06 p.m. The individual in the videos can be seen walking on several local streets.
Police also released an enhanced version of a video they previously released on Monday of the person of interest walking nearby at 2 p.m., more than two hours before the first 911 call came in shortly after 4 p.m.
The person shown in the footage is wearing a dark green-and-gray jacket, dark pants and shoes, a black bag, a dark beanie and a black face mask.
Police also released new still images Tuesday showing the masked individual.
2 Brown University students killed ID’d

Shooting victim Ella Cook was a sophomore from Alabama and served as vice president of Brown University’s College Republicans.
Cathedral Church of the Advent in Alabama said Cook was a longtime parishioner and described her as “a tremendous light and such a witness.”
The second victim was identified as Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.
U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick called Umurzokov’s death tragic and said he was deeply saddened by the loss.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the shooter.
