(NewsNation) — Nick Reiner’s arraignment on first-degree murder charges in connection to the death of his parents, actor and director Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner, has been postponed to Feb. 23.

Celebrity attorney Alan Jackson will no longer represent Nick Reiner, who will instead be appointed a public defender. Shortly before Reiner was set to be arraigned on Wednesday, Jackson asked Judge Theresa R. McGonigle if he could withdraw as Reiner’s counsel.

“We feel that we have no choice at this juncture but to withdraw as council and ask to be relieved,” Jackson said. “The public defender’s office has been notified. We’ve had conversations with them. They are here, they are staffed, they are ready to take over.”

Jackson said his legal team devoted “literally every waking hour” for the past three weeks investigating the case and that pursuant to the law in California Nick Reiner is not guilty

During a press conference outside the courtroom, Jackson said he cannot legally say why he can’t continue as Reiner’s attorney. Jackson said his legal team devoted “literally every waking hour” for the past three weeks investigating the case and that pursuant to the law in California Nick Reiner is not guilty. Jackson, considered one of California’s top 100 lawyers, has represented Kevin Spacey, Karen Read, Harvey Weinstein and Naasón Joaquín García, the third leader of the La Luz del Mundo church.

The couple was found stabbed to death in their Southern California home on Dec. 14, after being discovered by their daughter. Reiner was later arrested and is currently being held without bail in Los Angeles.

Documents from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health stated the couple died within “minutes” of receiving “multiple sharp force injuries” with a “knife, by another.” The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later announced the autopsy reports for the couple had been blocked from release, after a “security hold” was placed by the Los Angeles Police Department.

“While the cause and manner of death were previously released on these cases, due to the court order, the information is no longer available,” the statement read. “No other case information or records, including the Medical Examiner report, can be released or posted on the website until further notice.”

A motive for the killings has not been established, but multiple reports indicate Reiner, 32, had argued with his father at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien on Dec. 13. Reiner, who lived with his parents, has previously spoken openly about his struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness, and co-wrote a movie inspired by his struggles with his father.

NewsNation legal contributor Jesse Weber told “Morning in America” that while Reiner could plead not guilty by reason of insanity, his legal team could also reveal whether they’ve conducted a mental health evaluation.

“When you’re talking about insanity, you’re basically saying that Nick Reiner didn’t appreciate what he did, he didn’t understand the nature of his alleged actions, or he didn’t understand right from wrong,” Weber said. “The reason that’s such a difficult defense and particularly here is, then why check into a hotel room, allegedly in the early morning hours?”

Rob Reiner was long considered one of the most prolific directors in Hollywood, and his work included some of the most memorable movies of the 1980s and ’90s, including “This is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride.” The couple shared three children together — Nick, Jake and Romy Reiner.
