(NewsNation) — Nick Reiner, son of actor-director Rob Reiner, will be arraigned in January as he faces charges of murder in connection with the deaths of his parents.

An arraignment was initially expected to be held Tuesday, but on Wednesday, a judge ordered the arraignment continued until Jan. 7, 2026. Reiner will remain in custody without bail.

In court, Reiner waived his right to a speedy arraignment.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. He said the office had not yet determined whether they would seek the death penalty.

Reiner also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.

Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, suffering from stab wounds.

Investigators arrested Nick Reiner later that night. He has been held without bail since his arrest. Reiner has hired high-powered defense attorney Alan Jackson, whose other clients have included Kevin Spacey and Karen Read.

“This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” Jackson said. “There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. Those need to be thoroughly but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed.”

He asked for patience and dignity as the legal process plays out.

Reiner has a history of substance use disorder, which was the subject of a film he made with his father.

Investigators would not comment on whether substance use or mental health disorders were a factor in the case.

Rob Reiner, son of comedic actor Carl Reiner, was an actor-director known for work including “This is Spinal Tap,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride.”

Rob and Michele Reiner had three children together, sons Nick and Jake, and daughter Romy. Reiner also had a daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage to Penny Marshall.

In a statement, Jake and Romy Reiner thanked family, friends and fans for the outpouring of support, then asked for respect and privacy.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” the statement said.
