(NewsNation) — A manhunt for inmates who escaped from a jail in New Orleans on Friday continues after the group of 10 men was believed to have fled around midnight, police said.
Out of the 10, only two inmates are at large.
Local law enforcement officials have warned the public that the inmates should be considered armed and dangerous. In a press conference, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said that defective locks on cells allowed inmates to escape and said that was an issue she has been trying to address since she took office.
Here’s what is known about the escapees.
Antoine Massey
Massey, 33, was jailed on charges of domestic abuse involving strangulation and the theft of a car, which New Orleans police said took place in November. According to his booking information, Massey had also been charged with violating his parole.
Lenton Vanburen
Vanburen, 27, was arrested in 2021 following the investigation of a homicide, according to New Orleans police. Vanburen was established as the suspect in a shooting, and police obtained a warrant on a second-degree murder charge, New Orleans police said. Vanburen was already in custody at the Orleans Parish Justice Center after being charged in connection with an armed robbery. He pleaded not guilty in 2022.
Vanburen was arrested on Memorial Day after being found near Baton Rouge.
Derrick Groves
Groves, 27, was convicted in October 2024 in connection with the killing of two people during Mardi Gras in 2018. According to WDSU, Groves was found guilty of two charges of second-degree murder and two charges of attempted second-degree murder. The fatal shootings claimed the lives of Jamar Robinson and Byron Jackson, the report said.
Corey Boyd
Boyd, 20, was arrested in May 2024 and faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, obstruction of justice and threatening a law enforcement officer. Boyd was among three people who were charged in the death of a man who caught the group burglarizing cars, according to local media reports.
Boyd was among the escapees who were captured in New Orleans 10 days after jailbreak occurred and was among those who were found in the city limits by police.
Leo Tate
Tate, 31, was facing second-degree murder charges and attempted second-degree murder charges in connection with a 2018 shooting in which a 19-year-old woman was killed and a 16-year-old was sent to the hospital, NOLA.com reported. He accepted a plea deal in 2018, and the murder-related charges were dismissed, but he was convicted of obstruction of justice and was sentenced to 10 years.
Tate was arrested on Memorial Day along with Jermaine Donald after the two were apprehended near Geneva, Texas.
Kendell Myles
Myles was among the escapees but was captured by the Louisiana State Police. According to WDSU, Myles is facing charges of the intention to conceal a weapon, introducing contraband into a prison and possession of contraband. WDSU reported that Myles previously escaped from the Bridge City Center for Youth and was accused of robbing and carjacking a man in New Orleans in 2022. He was indicted on attempted murder and carjacking charges. Police said at the time of Myles’ arrest that he shot the carjacking victim twice before taking the vehicle.
Jermaine Donald
Donald, 42, had been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm.
Donald was arrested on Memorial Day along with Leo Tate after being apprehended by police near Geneva, Texas.
Gary Price
Price, 21, was jailed and faced charges of attempted first-degree murder, simple assault, criminal damage, domestic abuse, battery and assault with a weapon.
Robert Moody
Moody, 21, had been booked into the jail on weapons and drug charges. According to the NOLA.com report, he was also charged with obscenity in July 2024. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Moody was captured in the 3500 block of Second Street with the help of a Crime Stoppers tip.
Dkenan Dennis
Dennis, 24, was facing illegal weapons charges, extortion, kidnapping, armed robbery and theft charges.
He was apprehended near Chef Menteur Hwy and Dale Street.
