MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. — A pair of 10-year-olds were charged in a fire Saturday that damaged three school buses in Mississippi.

The buses were parked behind a local attendance center.

Jerome Henderson said he knows the parents of the children charged in connection with Saturday’s fires that all but destroyed the Marshall County School buses. He says he met with the parents, who were shocked by what happened.

“They caught them off guard about what their own kids did. They couldn’t believe that, and they were real upset,” Henderson said.

According to Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson, the parents brought the 10-year-olds in for an interview on Sunday, and the pair were released back to their parents.

The sheriff said the pair will have a hearing in youth court this week, where official charges will be announced.

He would not comment on how they gained access to the school property or how the fires were started.

Monday, Jose Roman, Transportation Director for Marshall County Schools, was at H.W. Byers to review the fire damage, calling it “devastating.”

Roman says the loss comes as the school system prepares for students to return in a matter of weeks and as his department starts finalizing bus schedules.

“It’s very difficult right now for us,” Roman said.

Calls for comment to district Superintendent Carrie Skelton were not returned.
