(NewsNation) — A search is underway for one of two suspects charged in the death of an Alabama man after he escaped from police custody while in the hospital.

Eddie Jordan Jr. was arrested after a multiagency search that took nearly a month as law enforcement looked for suspects in the January killing of 36-year-old Buford White. A second suspect, Javaris Russell Jr., was arrested Monday.

Jordan was taken into police custody April 23 and taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham after claiming an injury as a result of a brief police chase. The chief of the Tarrant Police Department said he was taken there because officials with the county jail said he was not fit to be held in his condition.

White’s sister, Cyndi Hebert, told a local news outlet that hours after she heard Jordan was arrested, she received a phone call from police saying Jordan had escaped. Hebert said she was angry and wanted answers.

“I feel like there’s a possibility, number one, that he’s long gone. I feel like that might have been our one shot,” Hebert said. “I’m just livid, absolutely livid. I want answers, and none are coming.”
