(NewsNation) — The GiveGoSend fundraiser for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing the UnitedHealthcare CEO, has raised over $1 million.

Mangione’s fundraiser received many donations before his birthday on Tuesday. As of Tuesday morning, the fundraiser had reached $1,035,526 and was still growing.

Luigi Mangione supporters leave messages on fundraiser

Over 28,000 people have shown their support by donating to Mangione’s fundraiser. Many donors also left messages with their donations.

One anonymous donor’s message read, “Happy Birthday to the man, the myth, and the legend Mr. Luigi Nicholas Mangione. I hope you know how loved and supported you are…” This donor gave $27 to his defense fund, presumably because Mangione is turning 27 years old.

Another donor wrote, “Happy birthday, dearest Luigi. I will keep being a voice. I will keep fighting. So many around the world are! I pray this is your only birthday spent there. $27.00 for your birthday + $36.00 I won by betting on my favorite horse trainer last week – pony was wearing green, by the way!”

Many other donors called Mangione a hero and thanked him. Back in February, the fund had only raised about $300,000. At the time, D4 Legal Committee spokesperson Sam Beard said in a release:

“We’re thrilled that Luigi is accepting these funds so that he can mount the strongest defense possible. The American private health insurance industry has ruined countless lives by denying people access to basic care and burying families in medical debt.”

Pam Bondi asks for death penalty in Luigi Mangione case

At the beginning of April, Attorney General Pam Bondi told prosecutors to seek the death penalty in Mangione’s case. She released a statement that said, in part:

“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America. After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”

Bondi also called the case “an act of political violence.”

Luigi Mangione accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO

Mangione is accused of shooting and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024. If convicted, Mangione could face life in prison, unless the death penalty is put into place.

Mangione, now 27, graduated from an Ivy League school and is facing separate federal and state murder charges in Thompson’s killing.

A federal grand jury indicted Mangione in Manhattan in April on four counts of stalking, the use of interstate facilities, murder through the use of a firearm and firearms offense. Mangione is currently in a federal jail in Brooklyn.
