BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Louisiana teen girl faces charges, including murder, after allegedly killing her baby after giving birth.

The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to Our Lady of the Lake in Walker on Nov. 21 after medical staff reported that a 14-year-old girl had recently given birth at her home.

According to Sheriff Jason Ard, emergency responders found a tote with the baby found dead inside with extensive neck injuries. “Medical personnel believe the infant was carried to full term, born alive and killed immediately after birth,” he said.

Ard said investigators believe that the teen hid her pregnancy from her family.

The teen was originally charged with failure to seek assistance and obstruction of justice in connection with the baby’s death. She now faces an additional charge of first-degree murder after an autopsy confirmed the newborn’s manner of death as a homicide. She is currently being housed in the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center.

“As you can imagine, this has been a difficult case for all first responders involved,” Ard said. “Please keep them – and the family – in your thoughts as this very sensitive investigation continues. Due to the nature of this case, no further details can be released at this time.”
