LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man is accused of going on a “shooting spree” in which he allegedly shot a 13-year-old walking home from school, multiple buildings and several homes in the Las Vegas area, according to documents obtained by NewsNation affiliate KLAS.
Hector Rodriguez, 36, faces several charges, including 28 counts of discharging a gun into a structure and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, records said.
North Las Vegas police arrested Rodriguez on Sept. 26 after police said he shot toward them and then led them on a high-speed chase, according to the documents. Police did not issue a news release announcing Rodriguez’s arrest.
In addition to the North Las Vegas shootings, police suspect Rodriguez is connected to shootings at Clark County Family Court, the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and the Wynn Las Vegas, documents said.
On Sept. 15, North Las Vegas police began an investigation into the “shooting spree,” which began with bullets impacting the department’s traffic division building that week, documents said. That day, a lieutenant “discovered a bullet entry into his office.” Investigators suspect Rodriguez shot at the building on Sept. 12, though poor video surveillance yielded no suspect at that time.
On Sept. 17, Rodriguez allegedly shot at the same traffic division building a second time. Staff inside the building “heard multiple gunshots and subsequent impacts to the building” but could not locate the shooter, documents said.
In addition to the traffic building, bullets impacted two homes in the area, police said. After the Sept. 17 shooting, North Las Vegas police issued a news release, asking the public to assist them in their investigation.
The following day, on Sept. 18, Rodriguez allegedly fired at the traffic building for a third time. The shooting happened at night, and officers could not immediately locate a bullet strike and did not call detectives, documents said. The next morning, a person located the bullet hole on the building.
After that Sept. 18 shooting, officers obtained surveillance video, which they said showed a silver four-door vehicle in the area at the time of the shooting.
On Sept. 19, a 13-year-old was shot while walking home from school, documents said. Police described the shooting as “random” and the injuries as non-life-threatening. Five days later, on Sept. 25, police issued a news release asking for help finding the shooter. The news release did not indicate the shooting victim was a child.
Also on Sept. 19, a neighbor located a bullet hole on the second floor of their home, police said.
On Sept. 20, a driver who lives about a mile away from the Sept. 19 shootings found a bullet hole in his car, police said.
On Sept. 23, Rodriguez allegedly fired a gunshot, which hit the second floor of the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center, documents said.
On Sept. 25, police continued to surveil the area where most of the shootings occurred, later finding a car matching the one in the earlier surveillance video. Police followed that driver into a parking lot near Centennial Parkway and Pecos Road, police said.
While contacting the driver, police heard a gunshot yards away near the intersection, they said. An officer then saw a similar four-door silver car speeding off. Officers chased that driver onto a nearby highway at speeds of 100 mph, they said. Eventually, officers took Rodriguez into custody.
Inside the car, police said they located a 9-millimeter handgun and a dashcam, documents said. The camera did not capture any of the shootings.
“In the videos, Hector made several rambling, threatening statements, which involved killing police officers,” documents said. “In one of the videos, Hector stated he ‘had enough to make six Metro families cry.’ He then talked about shooting police officers in the head since they had bulletproof vests.”
Inside Rodriguez’s home, investigators said they located a methamphetamine pipe and a stolen gun.
The same weapon confiscated during Rodriguez’s arrest matches five Metro calls for service, including the shooting on Sept. 19 at Mandalay Bay, according to the LVMPD Forensic Laboratory. That day, a person fired several gunshots into the W Las Vegas tower, injuring a person inside a room, police said.
At the time, police said they believed the shooting happened off the Mandalay Bay property from “an unknown location to the west.” Medical personnel took one person to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that police said were caused by the damage.
A search of Rodriguez’s phone showed his GPS pinged him in the area of the traffic division at the time of the three shootings, police said.
North Las Vegas police did not issue a press release regarding Rodriguez’s arrest or subsequent shootings.
Rodriguez faces charges in both North Las Vegas Justice Court and Las Vegas Justice Court, records said. As of Tuesday, his criminal cases were stalled as several judges ordered him to undergo a competency hearing.
Rodriguez remained in custody at the Clark County Detention Center as of Tuesday, awaiting a Nov. 7 competency hearing.
After KLAS asked the department about the arrest, a spokesperson said they would issue a news release.
