PIKEVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — A man from the Tomahawk community was arrested in Paintsville for allegedly driving away from a hospital in his ex-girlfriend’s car while she was in the hospital waiting to give birth to their child.
An arrest warrant from the Pikeville Police Department shows that on Jan. 2, officers were called to the fourth floor of the Pikeville Medical Center in response to reports of a car being stolen. When officers got to the victim’s room, she said Christopher Moillette, 37, had come to see the birth of their child but took her car and left without her permission.
The mother-to-be reportedly told police that she feared Mollette had taken the car and left the county.
According to court documents, officers reviewed security footage at the hospital and allegedly saw Mollette, who was sitting in the car’s passenger seat due to visitation policies, getting into the driver’s seat before the car left the area.
A Pike County arrest warrant shows that authorities reached out to the car dealership and confirmed that the victim was the owner.
Officers wrote that the victim called Mollette, and he allegedly told her “it was none of her business where her vehicle was” before he hung up.
Mollette was arrested on Jan. 3 and charged with receiving stolen property valued between $1,000 and $10,000 and theft by unlawful taking, also valued between $1,000 and $10,000. He was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
The theft investigation remains ongoing.
