(KRON) – John Beam, the legendary Oakland, California, football coach who was featured in the Netflix show “Last Chance U,” has died, police confirmed Friday. The suspect accused of shooting him at Laney College on Thursday was taken into custody.
Beam, who resigned as football coach at Laney College last year and remained athletic director at the school, was shot on campus just before noon Thursday. He was taken to the hospital where he was in critical condition. He died at approximately 10 a.m. Friday, police said.
The suspect knew Beam, according to the Oakland Police Department, which said the shooting was not the result of a robbery. They described it as a “targeted” incident.
The suspect, police said, has been known to loiter on or around the Laney College campus, although he was not a student there. He played football at Skyline High School where Beam once coached but was never coached by Beam, police also specified.
Sources told Nexstar’s KRON the suspect arrested around 3 a.m. Friday. Officers arrested a person matching the suspect description who was spotted at a bus stop, according to Oakland police.
A weapon was also recovered that matched the caliber of evidence found at the scene.
“I’m grateful to the Oakland Police Department and our dedicated law enforcement partners for their swift work in making an arrest in the shooting of Coach Beam,” said Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee in a statement. “This arrest is a testament to the effective collaboration and dedication of our law enforcement community.”
The 66-year-old coach who achieved viral streaming fame through the Netflix “Last Chance U” series was taken to Highland Hospital following the shooting, which occurred near the school’s football field. He was in critical condition as of Friday morning, according to Peralta Community College District.
Police responded to the shooting as an active shooter situation initially. It was later determined not to be. On Thursday, OPD asked for the public’s help in locating a suspect who was described as a male wearing all dark clothing and a black hoodie.
Police have not identified the suspect in custody or possible motive at this time.
