(NewsNation) — A suspect was arrested after Vice President JD Vance’s home in Cincinnati was damaged early Monday morning, the Secret Service said.
A law enforcement officer confirmed to NewsNation that the suspect was identified as William DeFoor, 26. He was detained and charged with one felony count of vandalism and three misdemeanors for obstructing official business, criminal damage or endangering, and criminal trespassing.
Secret Service agents saw DeFoor run along the edge of the residence’s fence around midnight local time before entering the property and trying to break a federal law enforcement vehicle’s window with a hammer.
When confronted, DeFoor “ignored all commands and began to use the hammer to break glass windows across the front of the protected residence,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Ohio.
DeFoor has prior criminal charges of vandalism and was put under the guardianship of his mother in 2024 because of a mental illness, according to court records.
Vance posted on social media Monday morning that his family was OK and wasn’t home when it happened.
“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” he posted. “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.”
Vance previously told NewsNation he went home to Cincinnati over the weekend after an operation that ended in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. However, he confirmed to NewsNation on Monday that he was back in Washington, D.C. when the incident at his home occurred.
