DELTONA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 17-year-old boy was arrested on multiple felony charges after deputies said he tried to poison his adoptive mother with bleach.

It was the morning of April 19 when the boy’s 77-year-old mother went to the kitchen in their Volusia County home to grab a glass of milk. However, after pouring the milk into a glass and taking a sip, she was immediately struck by an “intense chemical taste,” deputies told NBC affiliate WESH.

The woman’s other son was home at the time and called 911. During the call, he can be heard telling dispatchers that the 17-year-old put “Clorox” in the milk container and was “attempting to poison” their mother.

Body camera video released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shows deputies arriving at the home and speaking with the boys’ mother.

At one point a deputy asks her, “How much do you think you had,” referring to the bleach-contaminated milk.

“I think I had a little bit, and I tasted it,” she replied.

A deputy smelled the milk and confirmed that it had a strong odor of bleach.

The teen’s mother did not report any immediate symptoms but requested a medical evaluation.

Authorities found the 17-year-old hiding in a room in the house.

Investigators said the teen told them he was aware of the danger and had intended for his mother to get sick. He added that he was upset with his mother and didn’t want to live with her.

The teen was arrested on felony charges of poisoning food or water, attempted felony murder, and aggravated abuse of an elderly person, according to WESH.
