BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJW) — A 17-year-old was arrested after a Lyft driver was shot and killed in Florida early Saturday morning.

According to a release from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a report of a shooting in Panama City Beach around 2:20 a.m.

At the scene, deputies said they found a victim lying on the road, suffering from a gunshot wound. That victim was then taken to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

According to the release, a witness told deputies they saw a man flee the scene and jump over a fence while firing a gun. Deputies and investigators began a search of the area.

The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old resident of Bay County. He was found on a nearby street and taken into custody, according to the release.

At the scene, the victim’s car was found on the road about 100 yards north of the victim. Investigators found bullet holes and blood inside the vehicle, the release said.

After investigators spoke with the suspect, they believed the victim was working as a Lyft driver and driving the suspect to a requested destination when the shooting occurred.

The suspect was charged with an open count of murder and was taken to the Bay County Jail, the release said.
