SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — NewsNation affiliate WKRG is learning more about a fatal stabbing that occurred Jan. 20 in East Milton.

Toby White, of Milton, Florida, was arrested Saturday in connection with the stabbing death of Lucy Reed, 77, who authorities say was killed in front of her husband last week. She was taken to Santa Rosa Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after the attack.

According to Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson, White stole a vehicle from an industrial area after the killing. He was initially chased in Alachua County, Florida, but he wasn’t identified as a suspect in the killing at the time, which led to the chase being called off.

Law enforcement officials later identified White as the suspect, which led to another chase. White reportedly crashed during the chase and fled into a wooded area.

Multiple agencies worked to apprehend White in Suwannee County, Florida.

According to Johnson, White told investigators “God told” him to when asked why he committed the crime.
