(NewsNation) — Fired Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was arraigned Friday and faces multiple charges in connection with an assault investigation.
Moore faces multiple charges, including invasion of a home in the third degree, stalking, and breaking and entering or entering without breaking.
Prosecutors said Moore and the victim had an intimate relationship for a number of years and that she broke up with him Monday morning. According to prosecutors, Moore continued to call and text her before she notified school officials and he was fired Wednesday.
Moore went to her apartment, barged inside and grabbed butter knives and kitchen scissors and threatened his own life, prosecutors alleged.
The judge placed restrictions on Moore, including electronic monitoring, prohibiting him from leaving the state without notifying the court, undergoing a mental health evaluation, prohibiting him from contacting the victim and prohibiting from using drugs and alcohol when released on bond of $25,000.
His next court date is set for Jan. 22, 2026, at 9 a.m.
Moore was fired from his coaching job due to an inappropriate affair with a staff member around the same time he was detained. The university said a law firm is investigating the matter.
The Pittsfield Township Police Department said officers had responded to an alleged assault in the area and said a suspect had been taken into custody. They did not specifically name Moore in that release.
In recordings from the Broadcastify platform, an emergency responder can be heard reporting that a woman says a man who has stalked her for months is “attacking her” at a house. In a subsequent audio, the wife and the mother of the unnamed suspect report that the man police are after is at a parking lot.
Authorities were “attempting to have the wife contact him” and get him to come home, according to the recording. In another recording, it’s reported the spouse told authorities the suspect was “suicidal” about his job.
Moore spent two years as head coach for Michigan, with two winning seasons.
Moore signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $5.5 million last year. According to the terms of his deal, the university will not have to buy out the remaining years of his contract because he was fired for cause.

Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Costas joined “CUOMO” on Friday to discuss the fallout of Moore’s firing.
“Sherrone Moore has some serious personal problems, and even if all the money that may be turning college sports upside down were half what it presently is, I think Sherrone Moore’s situation might very well be the same…” Costas said.
“So we shouldn’t take this necessarily as emblematic of anything, because this seems uniquely awful and seems to be more about his personal drama than about what’s affecting college sports overall,” he added.
