Police: Man covered in suspected fentanyl after crashing into business

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island man is facing DUI charges after he crashed his car into a building Wednesday night.

Officers responding to 1000 Division St. in East Greenwich around 7:30 p.m. found the car inside Restore Hyper Wellness.

Police said the driver, 44-year-old David Hickey, and a passenger ran off, but a third passenger was unconscious inside the car. That person was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The other two were later found, and police said Hickey was covered in “white, powdery substance believed to be fentanyl.”

A Rhode Island State Police K-9 was given Narcan after being exposed to the substance. Everyone was transported to the hospital to be evaluated.

Hickey was charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, obstruction, and duty to stop in an accident resulting in injury.
