(NewsNation) — The FBI is testing a hair from the decades-old murder of Amy Mihaljevic in hopes it could lead to the man who abducted and killed the 10-year-old girl.

Mihaljevic disappeared in 1989 in Bay Village, Ohio. Her friends told investigators that she had been getting phone calls from an unknown man who had befriended her and convinced her to meet him so that he could help her shop for a gift for her mother. Witnesses described a man they saw approaching her.

Months later, in early 1990, Mihaljevic’s body was found beside an isolated road.

Investigators received thousands of tips and investigated more than 100 possible suspects, but the man who took Mihaljevic still hasn’t been found.

Now, investigators are re-examining old evidence and utilizing new technology to attempt to crack the case.

Three hairs found on Mihaljevic’s clothes, which investigators already determined did not belong to her or her family, are being sent for testing in California.

Investigators hope that DNA can be extracted from the hairs and a profile developed to potentially locate the man who killed her.
