MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A police officer in Tennessee held on while a man got back in his car and tried to drive away during a traffic stop before crashing into a pole, the Memphis Police Department said.
The driver, Martez Morgan, 35, allegedly had bags full of powder cocaine and crack cocaine in his pockets when the officer finally made the arrest.
A Memphis officer pulled Morgan over around 5 Saturday evening near Peres and Hollywood in North Memphis, after he noticed Morgan was not wearing a seat belt.
Morgan was found to have a revoked driver’s license during the traffic stop, police said. The officer asked Morgan to step out of the Honda Accord, which police say he did.
As the officer started to place Morgan in handcuffs, he allegedly bolted back to the car and drove it southbound on Bryan Street, with the officer still holding on to him. There was a brief physical altercation inside the car until it crashed.
Morgan is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, no drivers license, evading arrest, resisting official detention and several traffic violations, including violation of seat belt law.
Records show he was booked into jail Saturday. No bond has been set.
