(NewsNation) — A Texas death row inmate slated to be executed Wednesday is giving what could be his last interview.
Steven Nelson, 37, was convicted of the 2011 murder of Pastor Clint Dobson at a Dallas area church.
In a newly recorded interview, Nelson tells “Banfield” he was merely a lookout for two accomplices during a robbery that spiraled out of control. He questions whether he got a fair shake from the justice system.
The 28-year-old Dobson was suffocated to death, and a 69-year-old church secretary was brutally beaten but survived.
The inmate says his attempts to communicate with the pastor’s church have been rebuffed. Asked what he would say to the surviving victim in the case, Nelson said he would apologize.
“People do deserve second chances,” he said. “I’m not the monster that they say I am.”
Nelson conceded he deserves to be locked up for his role in the crime.
