‘Just really angry’: Brown University student speaks after witnessing second school shooting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Zoe Weissman, who just turned 20, has now witnessed two school shootings.

The Brown University sophomore was in her dorm room Saturday afternoon when her friend called her to tell her about the shooting at Barus and Holley, an engineering building on campus. Two students were killed and nine more were injured.

“Right now, I’m just really angry,” Weissman told NewsNationo affiliate WPRI. “I’m angry that there are people like me who have now lived through two school shootings.”

When Weissman was in sixth grade, she was a student at the neighboring middle school when a shooting broke out at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018.

“I ended up being outside when the shooting happened, so I heard the gunshots and saw the first responders,” she recalled.

“Ever since then, I have PTSD from that event,” Weissman continued. “One of the many reasons I chose to come to Brown, besides the fact that I love this school as a whole, is that I feel really safe here and I still do.”

Weissman has been in her dorm since the shooting due to the shelter-in-place order. Authorities lifted the shelter-in-place order after a person of interest was taken into custody.
