(NewsNation) — Brian Walshe, the man accused of killing and dismembering his wife, Ana Walshe, was stabbed in jail Thursday, weeks before his October trial is scheduled to begin, his lawyer told WBZ-TV.

Walshe was attacked by another inmate with a “makeshift blunt instrument” and taken to the hospital, the Norfolk County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

“The individual who was assaulted was conscious and alert and taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for treatment,” according to the statement. “He was returned to our facility overnight.”

Walshe, 48, was arrested Jan. 18, 2023 and indicted on charges of murder, misleading a police investigation/obstruction of justice and improper conveyance of a human body.

Bob Ward, a reporter for Boston 25 News, told “Banfield” he was “shocked” to find out that Walshe was “in a situation where someone could get close to him” in such a high profile case.

So far, there is no information about who attacked Walshe.

Walshe did not appear in court Monday for a scheduled hearing.

Ana Walshe was last seen Jan. 1, 2023, and her body has still never been found.
