(NewsNation) — Bill Gates is pushing back on what he calls a “doomsday outlook” when it comes to fighting climate change.
The Microsoft co-founder published a memo in his blog Monday that called for a greater focus on preventing suffering and improving the lives of people in developing nations, saying the current narrative on climate change is driving policymakers to “focus too much on near-term emissions goals.”
“Although climate change will have serious consequences—particularly for people in the poorest countries—it will not lead to humanity’s demise,” Gates wrote. “People will be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future.”
The Gates Foundation, founded by Gates and his ex-wife Melinda French Gates, has spent years and poured billions of dollars into health care, education and development initiatives worldwide, including combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
The memo comes just four years after Gates released a book on climate change called “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster,” in which he outlines a plan to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. While he maintains that the issue of climate change is a serious issue, Gates said the progress being made is overlooked.
According to forecasts from the International Energy Agency, projected global emissions for 2040 have dropped from 50 billion tons to 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually.
“Read that again: In the past 10 years, we’ve cut projected emissions by more than 40 percent,” Gates wrote.
