(NEXSTAR) – Need to cash some checks, exchange some currency or grab a fistful of complimentary lollipops before the New Year? It’s likely your bank will be able to accommodate you on Dec. 31.
With a handful of exceptions, most major banks in the United States will be operating during relatively normal business hours on New Year’s Eve, spokespeople for several major financial institutions have confirmed. Their physical branches will, however, be closed on New Year’s Day before opening back up on Friday.
Major banks operating regular hours on New Year’s Eve:
- Bank of America
- Capital One (bank branches and Cafés)
- Huntington Bank
- Truist Bank
- U.S. Bank
- Wells Fargo
Major banks operating special hours on New Year’s Eve:
- Chase Bank branches will close at 3 p.m. local time on Dec. 31.
- Citibank locations will be open on New Year’s Eve, though “exact operating hours” may vary by location or market, according to a spokesperson.
- BMO branches may be operating on reduced hours on Dec. 31; clients are advised to check with the bank’s website for a specific location’s hours.
- M&T Bank branches are closing at 3 p.m. local time on New Year’s Eve. Customer service (via phone) will also end at 3 p.m.
- PNC Bank branches will be closing slightly early, at 4 p.m. local time on Dec. 31.
- TD Bank branches that usually stay open until 6 p.m. local time will instead close at 5 p.m. local time. All other branches will close normally at 5 p.m.
Most major bank branches are generally closed on federal holidays, seeing as the Federal Reserve also closes its offices in observance. In 2026, the Federal Reserve will observe New Year’s Day (Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 19), Washington’s Birthday (Feb. 16), Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (June 19), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (Sept. 7), Columbus Day (Oct. 12), Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) and Christmas (Dec. 25).
As usual, ATMs operated by major banks will be largely accessible on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, as will some online banking services. But certain transactions made on New Year’s Day (or after normal banking hours on New Year’s Eve) may be delayed until the next business day.
Regional banking institutions, meanwhile, may be operating limited hours as well. It’s best to check with your local branch if you need access to in-person services ahead of the New Year.
