The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will not release a federal employment report for October after missing the window to collect data from households during the government shutdown, the agency announced Wednesday.
In a Wednesday press release, BLS said it was unable to conduct its monthly survey of households — which makes up half of the federal jobs report — with nearly all of its staff furloughed during October. BLS was one of dozens of federal agencies effectively frozen during the lapse in government funding, which lasted a record 43 days from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12.
BLS uses its household survey to determine the national unemployment rate and employment levels across various demographic groups. The agency also collects payroll data from businesses through its establishment survey, which the bureau uses to calculate job growth by industry.
The agency said the establishment survey data for October will be included with the November jobs report, which is scheduled to be released Dec. 16.
The September jobs report, which was scheduled to be released Oct. 3, will be published Thursday morning.
