(NewsNation) — Most taxpayers have until April 15 to file taxes for income made in 2024, but some may be able to request an extension.

The Internal Revenue Service requires anyone who needs an extension beyond the normal April 15 deadline to file an extension by that same date.

If you don’t think you can submit your tax return in time, you must request an extension from the IRS by April 15, also known as Tax Day, to avoid any penalties. You would still need to pay any taxes owed by Tax Day, however.

How to request a tax extension with the IRS

There are three ways to request this extension, according to the IRS:

  • Pay what you owe using an online payment option, then check the box that you are paying as part of filing for an extension. Keep the confirmation number you receive.
  • Use the IRS Free File tool to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.
  • Request an extension by mail by filing Form 4868.

If you are granted an extension, you have until Oct. 15 to file your 2024 taxes.

What if I experienced a natural disaster?

Those who experienced a natural disaster in 2024 can apply for an extension. This includes those affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton and individuals and businesses in the parts of California that were affected by the wildfires.

What you need to know to file your taxes

Anyone who is under 65 years old and made at least $14,600 or more in 2024 must file a return. This is the minimum income requirement for those who are filing individually. If filing jointly, anyone making above $29,200 must file if both spouses are under 65. This increases to $30,750 if only one spouse is under 65.

If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is $84,000 or less, you can qualify to file your federal tax return for free.

Whenever you decide to file, you will need to have many documents available. According to the IRS, you need:

Personal information:

  • Social Security number or Employee Identification Number
  • Bank account and routing numbers
  • Adjusted gross income
  • Refund amount from the 2023 tax year
  • Your current address
  • PIN number if you e-filed in 2024
  • IP PIN if you were a victim of identity theft

Income information:

  • Paycheck stubs
  • Bank statements or documents from payment apps
  • Any checks addressed to you
  • Unemployment payments

The IRS typically processes refunds within 21 days. You will typically receive your refund quicker if you choose to receive your refund through direct deposit. If you file by mail, it can take longer.

You can track your refund states on the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund” tool.
