(NewsNation) — Wholesale egg prices have come down from their highs in January. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins tells NewsNation’s “Morning in America” that store prices in many areas are already following suit.
“The price of eggs has affected every American family,” Rollins said. “It has been a big deal, especially for those at the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder.”
Rollins touted a plan to fight bird flu, including an increase in biosecurity measures and efforts to repopulate culled chickens. Some suggestions from the administration have caused backlash from experts, including Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s idea that bird flu should be allowed to run through flocks without culling.
The administration has also imported eggs to help ease shortages caused by bird flu.
While the wholesale price of eggs is down, store prices haven’t always followed as quickly. While some areas are already seeing cheaper eggs others, including those where there is less competition among supermarkets.
The Justice Department is also investigating whether major egg producers have violated antitrust laws by sharing information about prices and supply.
Rollins did warn that consumers could see a bump in egg prices in coming weeks as Easter, which she called the “super bowl” of eggs, approaches.
“They may go back up a little bit but hopefully we’re in a good spot,” Rollins said.
