SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A viral video showing a man being discovered hiding in the trunk of a Waymo by a female passenger is raising concerns about the safety of the driverless taxis. The video was originally posted to TikTok under the caption, “I ordered a Waymo for my daughter and a random was in the trunk.”
In the video, the female passenger can be heard asking the man why he’s in the trunk.
The man tells the woman he was put in the trunk and couldn’t get out.
“Who put you in?” the woman asks.
“The people,” he responds.
A subsequent video posted to the same TikTok account appeared to show the man being detained and questioned by police. A juvenile female was also seen in the video and could be heard talking to a Waymo representative, who said they would provide the rider with a credit.
NewsNation affiliate KRON confirmed the incident with Waymo. The autonomous taxi company said its Rider Support Team assisted the rider and that they were OK. Waymo also said it followed up with them afterward.
A Waymo spokesperson told KRON that the AV company already has methods in place for addressing situations like this one and is actively working on ways to improve them. According to the TikTok, the incident took place in East Los Angeles.
KRON has reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department for more information.
The incident, which comes on the heels of two instances of pets being killed by Waymos on the streets of San Francisco, raises further questions about the safety of the driverless vehicles.
Waymo, which is owned by Google parent company Alphabet, is headquartered in Mountain View.
