(NewsNation) — Uber announced new features that let women riders and drivers choose to be matched with each other.

“For the first time in the U.S., we’re launching Women Preferences—features designed to give women riders and drivers more choice, more confidence, and more flexibility when they use Uber,” said Camiel Irving, Uber’s vice president of U.S. and Canada operations, in a release Wednesday.

For riders, the app will allow users to request a woman driver for on-demand rides and pre-booked trips, as well as set a general preference to designate that woman drivers are preferred.

Drivers will also have the option in settings to request women riders.

Uber does not guarantee that these requests will always be granted, though the likelihood of women being paired increases.

Woman Preferred View” was first launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019, following the passage of a law allowing women to drive. Since then, the feature has been used in 40 countries.

Uber is set to pilot the program in Los Angeles, Detroit and San Francisco next month.
