(NewsNation) — TikTok unveiled a new feature Wednesday, designed to bring “more context to content” on the social media platform.
“Footnotes” allows users to add “relevant information” to videos and rate helpfulness of comments, similar to X’s Community Notes used by X and a feature recently adopted by Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook.
The pilot program began in the United States in April. Users accepted into the program can now contribute to the new system, offering additional insights on videos across the platform.
“Footnotes draws on the collective knowledge of the TikTok community by allowing people to add relevant information to content on our platform,” the company said.
Unlike X and Meta, TikTok is maintaining its separate fact-checking program.
The company said Footnotes is meant to complement that work by adding “helpful details that may be missing,” improving the experience for viewers, creators, and contributors.
In addition to Footnotes, TikTok also announced new safety features, particularly for teens and content creators: Parental oversight of teen accounts, new “missions” aimed at supporting mental well-being, and creators can now pre-check if their videos qualify for the main feed and use expanded tools to filter out unwanted comments, words, phrases, and emojis.
TikTok says these efforts are part of its ongoing mission to promote transparency, safety, and a better user experience.
