(NewsNation) — Visa is partnering with artificial intelligence agents who can “find and buy” things customers may need on their behalf.

Purchases by AI agents could include things like groceries or plane tickets, depending on preferences and monetary limits set by users.

Visa is working with the top AI leaders — including Anthropic, Microsoft, IBM and OpenAI — to connect existing systems to the credit card company’s payments network.

In a release announcing the move, Visa said the development would set “a new standard for a new era of commerce.”

“Visa will help transform AI commerce, today a futuristic, relatively unknown concept, into a seamless, secure and personalized experience for merchants and consumers alike,” the release reads in part.

Ben Winters, director of AI and data privacy at the Consumer Federation of America, told NewsNation consumers should proceed with caution.

“It’s not just Visa and Mastercard where you’re spending your money, it’s not just the grocery store or the Nordstrom’s that knows they’re spending your money — it is that AI company,” Winters said.

“And that AI company is hungry for data,” he added. “So, there’s multiple entities using that data for their own benefit in ways that you might not even know.”

Pilot projects are underway, and a major rollout of the AI agents is expected in 2026. Visa’s announcement came alongside similar endeavors from Mastercard and PayPal.
