(NewsNation) — Russia’s first AI robot took a tumble during its unveiling Tuesday.
Footage from the event in Moscow shows the humanoid robot named AIdol falling on stage after taking a few steps forward. The robot appears to have lost its balance after trying to raise its right arm. Following the tumble, two assistants worked quickly to remove the robot from sight and offstage.
Reuters reports that Russian media quoted Vladimir Vitukhin, CEO of the tech company Idol, which developed the robot, as saying he hoped that “this mistake will turn into an experience.” According to the outlet, developers of the robot claim it can perform three basic human functions — move on its feet, manipulate objects and communicate with humans.
The viral video has raised questions around Russia’s readiness in the robotics sector. Newsweek reports Vitukhin has dismissed the criticism and notes that AIdol is made up of 77% Russian-made components, with plans to increase to 93% in future productions.
