(NEXSTAR) — Have you been longing to go for a Target run, only to have no Target to run to? That could be changing soon.
While several retailers and restaurants have announced plans to close locations in the near future, Target is working on dozens of future stores.
The Minnesota-based retailer’s website lists nearly 40 sites that will, at some point, be home to a Target store.
A representative confirmed to Nexstar that the list serves as a roundup of future store sites but not a “comprehensive view of every store in our broader pipeline.” The locations can further have various timelines, and the list does not include all of the stores set to open in 2026.
Nonetheless, these Target stores are expected to open eventually. Details for each are released closer to that specific opening date, the company said.
Some of the stores currently listed as “upcoming” online opened in the fall. That includes stores in Queen Creek, Arizona; Fresno, California; Wesley Chapel Grove, Florida; Grand Island, Nebraska; Indian Land, South Carolina; Stafford, Texas; and South Riding, Virginia
Among the states where Target is gearing up to grow the most (at least as of December 2025) are Florida (4 stores), North Carolina (5), and Texas (5). Eighteen other states are on track to get at least one Target store in the future.
Here’s where Target says it expects to expand:
- Arizona: Buckeye and East Mesa
- California: Bakersfield and Perris
- Colorado: Denver and Firestone
- Florida: Clearwater, Fort Lauderdale, Lake Nona, and Winter Haven
- Georgia: Covington
- Idaho: Chubbuck
- Kentucky: Frankfort
- Ohio: Lima
- Pennsylvania: Hermitage
- Massachusetts: Springfield
- Missouri: Springfield and University City
- Mississippi: Tupelo
- New Jersey: West Orange
- New York: Bridgehampton
- North Carolina: Fayetteville, Fuquay-Varina, Mebane, Myrtle Grove, and Selma
- South Carolina: Lexington and Seneca
- South Dakota: Brookings
- Texas: Dallas, Forney, Fort Worth, Katy, and Little Elm
- Utah: Herriman, Lehi, Logan
- Virginia: Norfolk
- Wisconsin: Brown Deer
Five of these stores – Bakersfield, California; Springfield, Missouri; West Orange, New Jersey; Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina; and Dallas, Texas – are currently hiring. According to Target, these stores – as well as locations in Delano, California, and Jersey City, New Jersey – are slated to open in spring 2026.

In most cases, the new Target stores are anchoring new or growing developments and are expected to open in 2026.
That includes the stores in Buckeye and Lake Nona, which were both previously expected to open in spring. The Target store in Frankfort could open in summer 2026, while the store in Hermitage may be ready at the end of the year.
Local reporting shows stores in East Mesa, Perris, Denver (which was one of the first places Target ever expanded to), Firestone, University City, Selma, Brookings, Katy, Little Elm, and Brown Deer could open in their respective development projects next year.
Target is also headlining developments in Winter Haven, Myrtle Grove, and Lexington (the development here is overseen by a company co-owned by former NFL running back Emmitt Smith).
In some cases, Target is taking over sites that held relics of retail, like a former Sears store in Clearwater, a theater and office retailer in Fort Lauderdale, a shuttered Macy’s in Lima, an old mall in Logan, and the nation’s last full-size Kmart in Bridgehampton. Officials in Norfolk, Virginia, announced in September that Target will be built on the site of a former Kroger store.
Target will join the “growing” Covington Town Center in Covington, just outside of Atlanta, local officials announced in October. No completion date was given for this location, nor for the Target stores expected to be built at the Springfield Crossing development in Massachusetts or in Fayetteville.
Meanwhile in Chubbuck, construction could begin next year on the Target at the Pine Ridge Mall that’s being redeveloped, according to the Idaho State Journal. Sources told the outlet the store could open in 2027. The Target in Tupelo is expected to open within the next two years, local reporting shows. The store set to open in Mebane will be the city’s first.
Some of these communities (or at least their neighbors) will also see Buc-ee’s locations open their doors in the coming years, potentially giving you the chance to snag some Beaver Nuggets while out on your Target run.
